As
far as Casorenzo Art Studio is concerned,
this year’s colour is GREEN.
And it was a brilliant green this Wednesday which marked
the launching of Casorenzo’s Tree of Life
Project on the promenade gardens of Birzebbugia,
supported by Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar
and Oasi, and kindly sponsored by Faber
Castell. It was the brilliant green of youth that
saturated the event with the participation of many Casorenzo
Art Studio junior students along with young passers-by who
designed and painted fabulously colourful leaf shapes which
were then stuck to a large Tree of Life billboard. Discarded
material was used throughout and recycled into beautiful
artistic cameos of creativity. The most welcome endorsement
of the children’s enthusiasm for environmental responsibility
was the eager participation of the children’s parents.
To
mark the event, Nature Trust Malta supplied
two olive trees which were planted in the Birzebbugia promenade
gardens together with the unveiling of a carved stone plaque
commemorating young artists’ involvement in the greening
of Malta. With a backdrop of lively jazz music played live
by Norman Cristina the kids not only enjoyed themselves
but also raised money to fund Casorenzo’s much larger
environmental ambitions. Together with the environment group
Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, and with the
cooperation of the Ministry of the Environment,
Casorenzo is aiming for a large planting of more indigenous
trees in the autumn of this year, planned to take place
at Wied Blandun which is close to one of Malta’s most
polluted areas.
This
event was all about the children who represent a tremendous
promise for Malta’s future, responding enthusiastically
to the artist C. S. Lawrence’s message about each
individual taking personal responsibility for protecting
and sustaining the balance of the eco-system. This was rewarded
with prizes kindly donated by Faber Castell
and the Birzebbugia Local Council while
the Tree of Life billboard, now blazing with dozens of beautifully
painted leaves, is a flag to be treasured by all who value
the multifaceted beauty of Malta’s environment.
Casorenzo’s
initiative will not only plant locally-grown trees near
urban areas suffering the effects of air pollution but will
also raise funds for the social and environmental work being
carried out by Oasi and FAA.
Casorenzo
invites all those interested in these issues to make donations
to the Tree of Life fund at NHSBC 470 8821 6001.
Receipts will be sent to all donors.
